Groupoid

を object が一つで morphism が全て isomorphism である small category とみなしたとき, その一般化には二通りのものが考えられる。 Monoid と groupoid である。Object を一つにしたまま, morphism に isomorphism 以外のものも許したのが monoid であり, morphism が全て isomorphism という条件を保持したまま object が一つという条件を外したのが groupoid である。

ただし, この MathOverflow の質問によると, 歴史的には category より groupoid の方が先に登場したようである。Brandt の [Bra27] である。

Groupoid は, よく次のような図式で表わされる: \[ \xymatrix { G_1\times _{G_0}G_1 \ar [r]^(.6){m} & G_1 \ar [r]^{i} & G_1 \ar @<1ex>[r]^{s} \ar @<-1ex>[r]_{t} & G_0 \ar [r]^{u} & G_1 } \] \(G_0\) が object の成す集合, \(G_1\) が morphism の成す集合である。また \(m\), \(i\), \(s\), \(t\), \(u\) は, それぞれ, 合成, 逆射, 定義域, 値域, 恒等射を対応させる写像である。

基本的なことが簡潔にまとまっているものとしては, Moerdijk の [Moe02] がある。Groupoidification に関する Baez らの [BHW] の最後にもまとめがある。

Groupoid は, 従来作用素環の理論などでよく使われてきたようである。 [Ren80] といった本がある。Connes の [Con79] でも主要な役割を果している。より新しい本なら, Paterson の [Pat99] がある。Measured groupoid や Lie groupoid などから von Neumann algebra\(C^*\)-algebra を作る操作が functor としてできることについては, Landsman の [Lan] に書かれている。

表現論的には, Tannaka-Krein duality の一般化 [Ami07; Amia; Amib] なども考えられている。

Algebraic topology における groupoid の役割については, Ronald Brown の [Bro99] という解説がある。Groupoid 全般についての解説としてもお薦めである。他の survey としては, [Bro87; Wei96] などがある。 Higgins の本 [Hig71] は, groupoid に関する唯一の教科書と言ってもいい本であるが, Theory and Applications of Categories の reprint として download 可能である。

Brown らの目指していることは, Brown と Higgins と Sivera が書いた “Nonabelian algebraic topology” という本 [BHS11] を見ると分かる。
