Gel’fand-Naimark duality

可換な \(C^*\)-algebra とコンパクトHausdorff空間の間の“一対一対応”を与える Gel’fand-Naimark duality [GN43; GN94] は, 代数的トポロジーでは, \(K\)-theory を理解する上で, 是非とも理解しておきたい定理である。

解説としては, Doran と Wichmann の [DW77] や Doran と Belfi の本 [DB86] がある。Takesaki の本 [Tak02] も見るとよい。 ただ, この手の関数解析の本で欠けているのが, 圏論的な視点である。 非可換幾何に関するblogのこのpost にも書かれているように, 現在では, 2つの圏の間の contravariant な同値と考えるのが普通だろう。そのような圏論的なアプローチとして, Negripontis の [Neg71] がある。 Dell’Ambrogio のノート も圏同値として書かれている。

可換な実 \(C^*\)-algebra は, Rosenberg の[Ros] によると, \(\Z /2\Z \) の作用を持つ空間に対応するようである。そこでは, Arens と Kaplansky の [AK48] の Theorem 9.1 が参照されている。

Gel\('\)fand-Naimark duality に現れる 極大イデアルの成す空間は, Grothendieck 流の代数幾何の基礎となっている, prime idealの成す“空間” のアイデアの元になったのではないだろうか。全くの想像ではあるが。

関連した duality としては, (局所) コンパクトHausdorff空間 \(X\)上の vector bundle とその section の成す projective \(C(X)\)-module の対応がある。Gel\('\)fand-Naimark duality も含んだ形のものは, [BCL07] では, Alonso Takahashi の “surprisingly almost unnoticed result” として紹介されている。

局所コンパクト Hausdorff 空間の中の特別な class に対応する \(C^*\)-algebra の class は何か, とか, その逆も自然な問題である。 例えば距離空間と separable \(C^*\)-algebra の関係は Chou の [Cho12] で解説されている。 ここでの separable は, 位相空間として可分ということである。

  • (単位元を持たない) 可換な separable \(C^*\)-algebra と \(\sigma \)-compact, locally compact, metrizable space が対応する。

よって, コンパクトの場合に限れば, 距離空間は 可分な可換 \(C^*\)-algebra に対応することが分かる。例えば, Mahanta の [Mah15] はその視点で書かれている。

群の作用を持つ場合についても考えられている。例えば, Tobolski の論文 [Tob] の §2.1 に登場する。そこでは, Woronowicz の [Wor80] が参照されている。

Tobolski ら [CT] は, pro-\(C^{*}\)-algebra と quasitopological space の間の対応についても述べている。 Dubuc と Porta [DP80] により最初に証明され, その後 Phillips [Phi88] により独立に証明されたようである。

非可換 Gel\('\)fand-Naimark duality と言えるものもある。問題は, 空間に対応するものが何か, であるが, それについては様々な提案が行なわれている。

例えば, Patel の [Pat] では, 一般の \(C^*\)-algebra に対応するのは, locally compact Hausdorff の quotient として表される空間のようである。 他に, Kruml と Resende ら [Kru+03] の quantale (quantum locale) を使うというアイデアや, de Silva [Sil] の位相空間の図式を対応させるというものもある。 他にもまだまだ様々なアプローチがあり, de Silva は Fujimoto の [Fuj98] を参照している。

Grothendieck topos の中でのある種の locale と可換な \(C^*\)-algebra の間の duality という形の一般化は, Banaschewski と Mulvey による一連の論文 [BM97; BM00b; BM00a; BM06] で考えられている。 Mulvey のホームページからは, Gel’fand-Naimark duality についての slide も download できる。

Gel’fand-Naimark duality の categorification が何かというのも, 興味深い問題である。 Baez の論文 [Bae97] によると, その一つとして Doplicher-Roberts の reconstruction theorem が考えられるようである。

The \(n\)-Category Café での議論も見るとよい。

The \(n\)-Category Café での別の postでは, Bertozzini により \(C^*\)-category への Gel\('\)fand-Naimark duality の一般化が考えられている。そのために \(C^*\)-category の spectrum として導入されたのが spaceoid という概念である。
