2011年末の理化学研究所でのワークショップ 「数理連携10の根本問題の発掘」 に参加して, 物性物理学の理論面もかなり面白いことが分かったのは収穫だった。
2016年のノーベル物理学賞は topological phase of matter に関するものだったことから, この MathOverflow
の質問 にもあるように, これを切っ掛けに物性物理学に興味を持ったトポロジストも少なくないようである。 その質問の回答を眺めてみるとよいと思う。
2011年のワークショップで紹介されたのは \(K\)-theory との関係で, topological insulator や topological
superconductor に関係した話題だった。
トポロジーとの繋りは first Chern class が現われることであるが, それはより古くから quantum Hall effect
で知られていることである。 例えば, \(K\)-theory は Bellissard の [Bel86] で既に登場する。
非可換幾何学の側面から quantum Hall effect を解説したものとして, Bellissard, van Elst, Schulz-Baldes
の [BES94] がある。
これらのことを理解しようとして, まず Kitaev の [Kit09] を見てみたが, 全く理解できなかった。Kitaev や Ludwig ら
[Sch+] は, Bott periodicity が現れると言っているが, どこからどのように \(K\)-theory が出てくるのか理解できなかったのである。
その後, 数学的に定式化された Freed と Moore の [FM13] が出たおかげで, ようやく\(K\)-theory, より正確には twisted
\(K\)-theory, との関係が理解できた。 もっとも, 物理学的な現象との関連を無視して, 数学の理論としてであるが。
幸い, 2013年11月下旬に琵琶湖の辺で 物理と数学の研究者による合同勉強会が開催された。 そこで数学側の人間として, Freed と
Moore の論文の概要について話をさせてもらったが, 物理側の講演と活発な議論のおかげで, その物理学的な背景についての理解が進んだ。
琵琶湖の勉強会のもう一つの話題は topological order であったが, それについて最初に聞いたのは, 2012年6月に行なわれた
理研の集会の続編で, だった。
- topological order あるいは topological phase あるは topological states of matter
Topological order というのは, 自発的な対称性の破れにより説明できない秩序 (order) のことらしい。Witten ら
[QWZ] は topological states of matter (TSM) という言葉を使っている。 文献としては Wen の [Wen90]
を挙げるべきなのだろうか。 2013年11月の琵琶湖での勉強会では, Kitaev の toric code [Kit03] の解説があったが,
そのときの話によると, 1973年頃に Anderson により考えられた “RVB spin 液体” が topological order
に類するものの研究の最初らしい。そして Kitaev の toric code は quantum computer の研究から生れたもので,
物性の研究とは独立の発見のようである。
Wikipediaの記事 にも書かれているが, toric code を発展させた topological order の数学的モデルとして
Levin-Wen model [LW05] あるいは string-net model というモデルが考えられている。これは monoidal
category を用いたモデルであり, 興味深い。
Ronald Brown らが [BGB09] でより categorical なことを考えているが, これはどれぐらい有効なのだろうか。
