実数および複素数体上の代数多様体は, その closed point の集合に analytic topology を入れ, 位相空間とみなすことができる。
古典的に「多項式で定義された空間」であるが, 現在でも重要な研究対象であることには変りはない。
まず, smooth かどうかで扱いが大きく異なる。
- \(\R \) 上の smooth algebraic variety は \(C^{\infty }\)級実多様体になる。
- \(\bbC \) 上の smooth algebraic variety は複素多様体になる。
逆に smooth manifold をその上の \(C^{\infty }\)級関数の成す環を用いて, 代数幾何的に調べるということも考えられる。Joyce は
[Joy19] で \(C^{\infty }\)-ring 上の代数幾何学を構築しようとしている。
Smooth でない variety を調べる際には, まずその特異点を解消する, というのが一つの方法である。
Hauser が AMS の Bulletin に解説 [Hau03] を書いている。
特異点を持つ algebraic variety の topology について, これまでに何が分っていて今何が問題かということについては,
Totaro の ICM2002 での講演録 [Tot02] を読むのがいいだろう。Smooth な場合に定義された様々な不変量が,
特異点を持つ場合にも拡張されていることがわかる。
Dimca [Dim] は, 複素数体上で, \(\CP ^n\) 内の complete intersection の complement の連結性を調べている。
\(\bbC ^2\) の中の algebraic curve を plane curve というが, その complement
のトポロジーでさえまだよくわからないことが多い。実次元で考えると, \(\R ^4\) の中の \(2\)次元多様体なので, 結び目の次元を一つ上げたような感じである。Plane
curve の complement については, [Lib; Oka05; LM] などといった文献がある。 Libgober のホームページには
plane singular curve の complement についての問題について書いたものがある。
Real algebraic set のトポロジーについて調べてきたのは, Akbulut と King である。 [AK92]
という本を出している。Akbulut は [Akb06] で, 多様体がいつ real algebraic set と同相 (微分同相) になるか,
という問題についての survey を書いている。 また, 位相空間がいつ real algebraic set と同相になるかという問題につい ては,
McCrory と Parusiński の survey [MP07] を見るとよい。 その中で重要な役割を果たしているのは, Sullivan の結果
[Sul71] とその一般化である。
- real algebraic set \(X\) の任意の点 \(x\) に対し, その link の Euler 標数は偶数である。 よって, ある点での link
の Euler 標数が奇数になる空間は, real algebraic set と同相にならない。
そしてそのタイトルにもあるように constructible function という概念が, 中心的な役割を果たしている。最近では,
constructible function の Euler 標数に関する積分の研究も盛んである。
McCrory の [McC03] によると, 2次元以下では Sullivan の Euler標数による局所的な条件が,
必要十分らしい。3次元以上では Sullivan の条件を満たすが real algebral set と同相にならないものもある。4次元では, 少なくとも \(2^{43}-43\)
の独立な obstruction がある [MP00], そうであ る。
Betti数の和を考えている人もいる。Bihan と Sottile の [BS] では, stratified Morse theory
が使われている。彼らの Betti 数の評価の元になっているのは, Khovanskii の [Kho91] のようであるが。
可微分多様体から real algebraic set への写像を up to homotopy で \(C^{\infty }\)写像にすることができる, と Baird と
Ramras [BR] が言っている。
Sjöland [Sjö] によると, 組み合せ論の問題で real algebraic geometry に帰着させることができるものもあるようである。
多面体の一般化と考えれば, 分からなくもない。
比較的新しい不変量としては, algebraic cycle の空間のホモトピー群として定義される Lawson (co)homology
がある。
実数体は順序体なので, semi-algebraic set というものも考えられる。 等号だけではなく, 不等号も使って表されるものである。
