トポロジーに限らず, 数学者の系譜について知りたいときは, “The Mathematical Genealogy Project” の web
site で検索してみるとよい。 日本人の数学者は少なかったが, 結構増えてきた気がする。
有名な数学者の写真を集めた本として, Cook の [Coo09] がある。写真だけでなく, それぞれの数学者の生い立ちや数学観なども書かれていて,
結構面白い。
Category theory 関係の数学者については, nLab の people のページを見るとよい。
一口に数学者と言っても, 多種多様な考え方をする人がいることは誰でも気がついていることと思うが, Mumford は この blog の中で,
数学者を次の4つの種族 (tribe) に分類している。
- explorer
- alchemist
- wrestler
- detective
その動機になったのは Atiyah と Zeki による数学的な美の認識に関する実験である。
有名な数学者については, 様々な人が様々な文章を書いている。 目についたものを以下に書いてみた。順番は family name
のアルファベット順である。
著名な数学者が亡くなると, その分野の mailing-list で, 様々な人が生前の思い出やその数学者に関する逸話を紹介する。
Waldhausen が 2024年11月21日に亡くなったときの algebraic topology の mailing list では, 様々な
story が紹介された。 それが PDF にまとめられ ここか ら download できるようになっている。
