Profunctors and Equipments

Monoidal category \(\bm {V}\) で enrich された small category \(C\) を, object の集合を固定した \(\bm {V}\)-enriched quiver の 成す monoidal category での monoid object とみなすと, \(C\) から \(\bm {V}\) への共変関手は left \(C\)-module, 反変関手は right \(C\)-module とみなすことができる。

この視点から, 当然 bimodule を考えたくなるが, それは, 1960年代に [Jus], [Bun66], [And66] などの文献で profunctor の名前で登場した。未出版のものが多いが。 また, Benabou が [Bén73] で distributor として導入したものと同じである。

組み合せ論的問題に使おうという人もいる。 Rosebrugh と Wood の [RW94] や Fløystad の [Flø23] など。Yoon [Yoo] は Dowker duality の一般化のために profunctor を使っている。

Profunctor を扱うための枠組みとして, Wood [Woo82; Woo85] は category equipped with proarrow という構造を考えている。そして bicategory equipped with proarrow equipment という概念を導入した。Proarrow equipment は単に equipment とも呼ばれる。

Shulman [Shu08] は, Wood の proarrow equipment はある種の性質を持つ double category と同値であることを示し, framed bicategory の概念を導入した。 名前には “bicategory” が付いているが, double category の一種である。

Shulman は Cruttwell と共に [CS10] で virtual equipment と virtual double category という概念を導入している。
