Vertex operator algebra の何が面白いかは, Frenkel と Lepowsky と Meurman の本 [FLM88] の Introduction を読むのが一番である。 様々な分野で独立に発見されたことが, 実は vertex operator algebra を仲介にして深く結びついていた, というスリリングな物語が語られている。

もっと簡潔なものとしては, [LZ95] の Introduction もある。 90年代前半までの流れについてはよく分かる。 歴史的なことや motivation も含めて書いた解説として Lepowsky の [Lep07] がある。Lian と Linshaw の [LL] の Introduction にも vertex operator algebra が登場した頃のことが書かれている。
