\(C^{*}\)-algebra などの operator algebra の道具を用いた compact 群や locally compact 群の quantum
版の歴史については, Kustermans と Vaes の [KV00] の Introduction や Kustermans らの lecture
notes [Kus+] の Introduction を読むのが良いと思う。
Gel\('\)fand-Naimark duality で, compact Hausdorff space と対応するのは単位元を持つ \(C^{*}\)-algebra
なので, compact quantum group の定義はそれ程難しくはない。
現在 compact quantum group と呼ばれているものは, Woronowicz [Wor98] が導入したものである。
Compact quantum group の部分群と quantum quotient space は Podles により [Pod95]
で定義された。Wang は [Wan09] で simple compact quantum group の定義を提案している。
Wang [Wan95; Wan98] は, 直交群やユニタリ群が代数群であることに着目し, その関数環の非可換版 \(O_{N}^+\), \(U_{N}^+\)
を導入した。このようなものを \(O_{N}\) や \(U_{N}\) の free 版と呼ぶようである。 直交群には対称群が含まれるが, 対称群の free 版もある。それについては,
Banica の survey [Banb] がある。

また, 対称群の直交群の free 版の中間にあるような compact quantum group を Banica と Speicher
[BS09] は easy compact group と呼んで調べている。 このような “free quantum group” や liberation
については Banica の [Bana] がある。

Compact quantum group に関する様々な構成を category theory の視点から考えているのは,
Chirvasitu の [Chi15] である。例えば, compact quantum group の圏が finitely presentable
であることなどを示している。
Semigroup 版の compact quantum semigroup の概念も, [MV98; Auk14] などで定義されている。
Compact quantum group の dual に対応するものとして discrete quantum group がある。Franz
らによる compact quantum group と合せた Introduction [FSS17] がある。
Locally compact 群に対応するものを \(C^{*}\)-algebra で定義しようとするとき, 問題は単位元が無いことである。 つまり
comultiplication の coassociativity をどのように記述するか, である。 Locally compact quantum
group は, Kustermans と Vaes の一連の論文 [KV99; KV00; KV03] でその理論が構築されたが,
その際使われているのは, multiplier algebra である。
彼等は, [KV00] では \(C^{*}\)-algebra を用いていたが, [KV03] では von Neumann algebra を用いることにより,
\(C^{*}\)-algebra の場合の density condition を省くことができることを発見している。
Locally compact quantum group については, Kustermans らの lecture notes [Kus+] が
self-contained に書かれているので, まずこれを読むのが良いと思う。
拡張としては, Voigt [Voi08] による bornological quantum gorup がある。
